GARNETT James

James Garnett mrried Elizabeth Emma Wise  and the couple originally settled in Tambellup before deciding to move to Gnowangerup. In the beginning it would appear, beyond doubt, that the first Baptist services ever held in Gnowangerup were held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Garnett who had renterd a portion of "Eugenup" whilst clearing was done and a home made on "Glenroy". The remains of the old "Eugenup" homestead are still to be seen at the entrance to the property.. Mr. and Mrs. Garnett and their small family moved over from Tambellup during 1905. They had attended the Baptist church there and the Pastor, Mr. Campbell, arranged to hold services in their house, riding a horse over every three weeks.

 RUINS OF "EUGENUP"           #3

Settlers were few in those days and Elizabeth Garnett  could recall the early meetings, those who were there, and how they enjoyed the opportunity of meeting each other. Elizabeth maintained her connection with the church through all the years. Although moving to Katanning and having her membership there, Gnowangerup was still "home". She never sought to take a leading part in church affairs, preferring rather to take care of home duties and training her family, many whom are members of this and other Baptist fellowships.
